H.T. Chen & Dancers (Chen Dance Center, New York, NY) presents “SOUTH OF GOLD MOUNTAIN”, on April 19 at 3 PM at the Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts center at Samford University, Birmingham Alabama (tickets: 205 726 2853). The one hour play is a modern dance interpretation of the story of the Chinese men and women who settled in the deep South, lured to America by the promise of “gold” and committed to making a better life for their families.
The play will tell this story through contemporary dance and the use of traditional Chinese music with Deep South blues. “SOUTH OF GOLD MOUNTAIN” pays tribute to the families who ran Chinese groceries, laundries and restaurants, and those who quietly made a difference in the communities they lived in. The choreographers interviewed members of the CCBA as part of their research and have included photos of the CCBA community in the backdrop screens of the play. This tribute to the families who settled in our community and elsewhere in the South is a worthwhile event to see.
